Abstract
The research covers general characteristics of the biological factor of soil formation on Zmiiny island including its distinguishing features and natural conditions for the existence of vegetation. Except this, the research contains results of the first assessment of steppe herbal phytocoenosis biomass, describes soil and hydrological conditions which contributed to emergence of that biomass, and defines its role in soil formation.
