Abstract
Lead, arsenic, and glyphosate in soils may negatively affect inhabitants of the ecosystem. We hypothesize that analyzing the effects of each pollutant on worms in contaminated soil yields early insight into the possible bioaccumulation in organisms higher in the food chain. To test the effect of each contaminant on protein expression in N2 Caenorhabditis elegans worms and Escherichia coli were cultivated in soil in the presence of lead, glyphosate, and arsenic. Using atomic absorption spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance, contaminants were tracked within the organic samples. The presence of contaminants in soil was examined using scanning electron microscopy and electron dispersion spectroscopy. The effects of contaminants on protein expression in worms and E. coli was observed with two-dimensional electrophoresis.
