Abstract

Abstract Biological control of crown gall disease caused by Agrobacterium radiobacter var. tumefaciens by the closely related strain Agrobacterium radiobacter var. radiobacter strain 84 (Keane et al. 1970: Australian Journal of Biological Science 23: 585–95.) was evaluated on cuttings of Salix matsudana and Salix purpurea cv.‘Booth’ in pot and field trials. Disease was controlled completely in pot trials with strain 84 at levels greater than 106 cells/ml. Control was not complete in field trials because of the presence of pathogens resistant to bacteriocin 84.
