Abstract

In the 5th Framework Programme (5FP) of the European Commission (EC), the European Late Effects Project Group (EULEP) and the European Radiation Dosimetry Group (EURADOS) were funded to co-ordinate research in radiation protection based on their well-established experience. This was termed ‘clustering’ and was intended to encompass research funded by National Agencies and that funded directly by the Commission though their cost shared actions. EULEP is concerned with improving the understanding of the late biological effects of ionising radiation in the mammalian organism, in particular in relation to effects from external radiation and from the intakes of radionuclides in man. EURADOS is working to advance the scientific understanding and technical development and implementation of the dosimetry of ionising radiation in the fields of radiation protection, radiobiology, radiation therapy and medical diagnosis. The two organisations have developed extensive European networks that promote the exchange of scientific information between both member laboratories and other organisations. These two networks enable appropriate specialist groups to be formed when needed to solve problems or promote research identified within these organisations or upon request from external bodies. They are mainly prepared to provide expert advice to administrations from government agencies requesting support related to the safe uses of ionising radiation. Their work involves the interaction of experts from many fields of science and a wide array of methodologies.
