Abstract

Thirteen strains of mycobacteria isolated from dogs were examined for: their resistance to streptomycin, PAS, isoniazid, neotetrazolium, and potassium tellurite; their niacin-producing ability; and their virulence for the chicken. For the susceptibility test against antituberculous drugs, egg medium containing different concentrations of each drug was used; against neotetrazolium and potassium tellurite, the Dubos liquid medium was used. The amount of inoculum was 0.1 mg. in each case. Niacin formation was tested on egg medium according to Runyon's method. 4 Five milligrams of each organism were inoculated subcutaneously into white leghorn chickens. After three months, these chickens were autopsied and examined macroscopically and microscopically. Cultures for the bacilli were made from the spleen.
