Abstract

The effects of the administration of clomiphene citrate to castrated rhesus monkeys were studied with the use of the indices of per cent cornification in vaginal smears, changes in external genitals and perianal skin (sexual skin), and occurrence of withdrawal bleeding from the uterus. The results were compared with those obtained in subsequent cycles of treatment with clomiphene citrate and ethinyl estradiol together and with ethinyl estradiol alone.Clomiphene citrate had a definite estrogenic effect upon the vaginal mucosa and the “sexual skin” of the castrated rhesus monkey but did not cause withdrawal bleeding from the uterus. This compound did not block the anticipated estrogenic effects of ethinyl estradiol.Although clomiphene citrate may be “antiestrogenic” in the female of reproductive age with intact ovaries, this compound appears to have inherent estrogenic activity in the individual in a castrated or equivalent state.
