Abstract

The copper leachability for the chemical leaching tests for Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) have indicated enormous amount of pollutants have their released with potential problems for environmental effects. The aim of this study is new approaches for treatment of copper microbial leaching by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans microbes for reduce the copper concentrates and optimization was studied by adopting the Box–Behnken design. Statistical analysis of data has revealed that the bioleaching is greatly influenced by process variables such as effects of contact time, pulp density, particle size and temperature. The results showed that the parameter played an important role in copper leaching and precipitate formation. Under the optimization conditions of 0.25–0.42 mm size, bacteria activation time 21 days, with pulp density 12 g L−1, temperature 20˚C and bacteria inoculation 10% which was obtained maximum efficiency leaching rate of copper could be achieved in the presence of metal 96.6%. It is concluded that Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans microbes were suggested feasible for leaching copper from PCBs due to high recovery rate, leaching period was shorten 21 days and non toxic operation.
