Abstract

A novel unidirectional liquid spreading surface inspired by the N. alata peristome is proposed and fabricated by H. Chen and co-workers in article number 1601676, via two-step UV photolithography. Its superior unidirectional liquid spreading capability is demonstrated, and the underlying mechanism of unidirectional spreading is investigated. This bio-inspired surface will advance a variety of applications such as microfluidic devices and self-lubrication in mechanical engineering.
