Abstract
This chapter covers biogas production, classification of family size biogas plants, designs of approved models of family size biogas plants in India, entrepreneurship opportunities in implementing small size biogas plants in India, environmental aspect and its present status. Thermophilic digestion allows higher loading rates and achieves a higher rate of pathogen destruction besides higher degradation of the substrate. The microbial growth, digestion capacity and biogas production are enhanced by thermophilic digestion, since the specific growth rate of thermophilic bacteria is higher than that of mesophilic bacteria. Biogas development and training centres provide biogas plant development and maintenance training to entrepreneurs and masons. These trained entrepreneurs and masons construct family size biogas plant after identification of beneficiary and complete all documental requirements as needful to avail subsidy. Biogas is used to generate electric power as decentralizes source of energy in several countries. The technology for conversion of biogas to electrical power is simple and well known.
