Abstract

In late 1981 a 250 cow plug flow digester was built on a private farm (Millbrook Farm, Freeville, NY) as a part of Cornell University's Energy Integrated Dairy System (EIDS) project. The digester biogas was used to fuel a 6 cylinder 5.4 L spark ignition engine coupled to a 29 kW 1200 rpm induction cogenerator system. The engine's performance with high sulfur gas (1000 to 2000 ppm) and attempts at correcting operational problem are discussed. Results of the cogeneration system from October 1982 to August 1984 are detailed in this paper. The use of an oil conditioner and a high TBN (Total Base Number) oil used to neutralize the acid oil condition and extend the intervals between oil changes are discussed.
