Abstract

Biofloc technology (BFT) is an eco-friendly technology for higher productivity and also for sustainable development. At present, the biofloc technology is most popular among fish farmers. In this technology toxic materials released from fish's viz., nitrate, nitrite and ammonia were converted to useful product i.e., proteineous feed by the microbes, and hence reduces nitrogenous toxicity of entire culture system. It requires limited or zero water exchange under high stocking density, strong aeration and biota formed by biofloc. Most commonly cultured species in this fish culture system are tilapia and shrimps.
