Abstract

The boring bivalve Hiatella arctica (L.) is common in the lower intertidal and upper sublittoral zones of the Carboniferous Limestone coast of NW Co. Clare, Eire. Age determinations using growth rings are discussed and boring rates are calculated from the relationships between age and depth of boring to range between 0.125 and 1.0 cm a −1. The significance of Hiatella borings in weakening rock surfaces is discussed, suggesting that death and colonisation cycles are more frequent than rock fracture cycles.
