Abstract

Purpose: Degenerative musculoskeletal diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA) concern great parts of the global population. Tissue communication during disease onset and progression is characterized by inflammatory as well as degradative molecular processes that in the case of late stage disease often end in severe surgical interventions. The molecular interaction between joint tissues plays a vital role in perpetuating inflammation, matrix remodelling and tissue degradation in both arthritic diseases.
