Abstract

Bioenergetics' place in the history of psychological thought is identified and the experience of infancy is described in Bioenergetic terms. A Desire to Live/Will to Die/Will to Live picture of Personality Armoring is presented. The Erercises and their relationship to armoring as a coptng structure is illustrated with special emphasis on breathing and grounding as ways to release blocked energy. There is a brief list of Character Structures with a description of body types and related behaviors. In Physical Illness as a Coping Structure, the relationship between long-term blockages of energy and associated chronic or acute disorders is connected to larger sociological changes and perceptions of the meaning of health.
