Abstract

Currently there are several databases on biodiversity in different regions or countries, held in museums, herbaria, among other places, but each one has its own collection and storage data structure, which often does not allow the integration between them. This fact makes it difficult to access, to make available and to exchange information among distributed repositories around the world. Given this context, global and regional efforts have been made in order to integrate, organize and provide biodiversity data, such as the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), Inter-American Biodiversity Information Network (IABIN) and speciesLink. These initiatives have proposed the use of protocols, standards for data exchange and open architectures through collaborative efforts for data integration. Therefore, the aim here is to identify the efforts and tools applied to the integration and interoperability of biodiversity data. Keywords: Biodiversity Informatics, data integration, standards for data exchange, protocols.
