Abstract

Abstract. - Biodiversity has become an important consideration within the context of forest management. After a brief definition of biodiversity, we consider the example of a study currently underway in the southern Alps concerning the impact of various types of management on the diversity of flora and fauna, some insect groups and birds. It is apparent from this research that diversity shows constant variations across forest cycles and that previous human practice has a major influence on current diversity. The diversity of tree species (and their functional groups) plays a key role in the various dynamic processes that develop in the watershed under study.
