Abstract
In Indian agriculture, pulses play an important role in maintaining soil fertility and supplying portein to the large vegetarian population of the country. India is a major pulse growing country in the world, sharing 35–36 per cent and 27 - 28 per cent of the area and production of these crops, respectively. The commonly grown pulse crops in India are chickpea (Cicer arietinum) pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan) urdbean (Vigna mungo) mothbean (Vigna radiata) horsegram (Macrotyloma b Torus) mothbean (Vigna aconitifolia) lathyrus (Lathyrus sativus) lentil (Lens culinaris) cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) drybean (Phaseolus vulgaris) and peas (Pisum sativum). Diseases and insect pests are the major constraints to their production. Most of the pulse crops are grown under rainfed conditions, hence less attention is paid for the management of these crops and protection against diseases gets least priority.
