Abstract

Objective To evaluate the biocompatibility of the chitosan used in the vas deferens fertility control. Methods In 60 4-month-old male Wistar rats, acute and subacute toxicity test, hemolysis and the vas deferens plantation test were used to explore the biocompatibility of chitosan. Results In acute toxicity test, there was no significant difference in body weight between experimental group and control group (P > 0.05).In subacute toxicity test, the body weight,HB,WBC,lymphocytes and neutrophils ratios in experimental group were (252.0 ± 16.1) g,(13.80 ± 1.37) g/dL,(8.68 ±0.36) x 109/L,(76.60 ± 6.81) % and (8.60 ± 3.64) %,showing no significant differences from control group (P >0.05).Tissue and cell degeneration, and necrosis were not seen. The hemolytic rate in hemolytic experimental group was 0.37 percent, less than accepted 5.00 percent.Vas deferens plantation experiment showed a minor inflammatory response. Conclusion Chitosan using in the vas deferens fertility control has good biocompatibility.
