Abstract

Exposure to either nonactivating (nM) or activating (µM) concentrations of nicotine desensitized nicotine-stimulated [3H]dopamine release from striatal synaptosomes and 86Rb+ efflux from thalamic synaptosomes, but the kinetics of desensitization were not identical. Although nicotine-stimulated 86Rb+ efflux was completely inhibited by exposure to either low or high concentrations of nicotine, a significant fraction of [3H]dopamine release persisted. The kinetics of functional desensitization was similar to that for high affinity [3H]nicotine binding.
