Abstract

We propose a mechanism of fractionation of carbon isotopes in living organisms that explains lightening of carbon lsotopic composition of organisms as compared with the assimilated carbon- dioxide and nonunlform distribution of carbon isotopes in the biochemical components of cells. The distributinn of carbon isotopes in the biocomponents may be used as Indicator of biogenic nature of organic compounds and of the processes of transformation of organic matter into caustobiolllhs. The relation of carbon isotopic composition of organic matter and petroleum to the environment of sedimentation is explained.—Authors.
