Abstract

The bioavailability of sediment sorbed chemicals for uptake by fish has been investigated in two series of lethal toxicity experiments. Mortality of fish ( Poecilia reticulata) which were exposed to chlorinated benzenes was prevented or at least delayed by the presence of sediment. Chemical concentrations in fish that did not die were up to a maximum of 2.0 μmol/g fish. Lethal concentrations in fish which died in the experiments ranged from 2.8 to 3.1 μmol/g fish.
