Abstract

A callus culture of Lactuca aculeata, except for commonly distributed caffeic acid derivatives typically found in the Asteraceae family (chlorogenic acid, methyl caffeate, 1,5- dicaffeoylquinic acid), yielded bioactive lignans: (+)-5-methoxybalanophonin, syringaresinol, (+)-balanophonin-9-O-β-glucopyranoside, (+) buddlenol A, (−)-dihydrodehydrodiconiferyl alcohol-4-O-β-glucopyranoside and (−)-dihydrodehydrodiconiferyl alcohol-9-O-β-glucopyranoside. Sesquiterpene lactones characteristic of the parent plant were not found in the examined tissue. This is the first report on the presence of bioactive neolignans: 5-methoxybalanophonin, balanophonin glucoside and buddlenol A in the genus Lactuca L.
