Abstract

The growing number of bioactive substances being found in human milk suggest the need to attempt their categorization according to function. Two major themes that emerge from recent research on human milk and lactation are efficient nutrient transfer from mother to infant and protection of the infant from disease. Bioactive substances in human milk may be considered in terms of these themes.
