Abstract

After an introduction into the key concepts of attachment theory, the results of neurobiological research about the impact of traumatic experience on the development of attachment disorders are discussed. During infancy and early childhood, experience of physical, sexual and emotional violence as well as of severe neglect and deprivation all have a negative influence on the development of the brain and the maturation of neuronal networks. The sequelae are the development of disorganized attachment and attachment disorders. Early diagnostics and intensive psychotherapeutic treatment are crucial to the prevention of chronification of these severe emotional disorders. Attachment-based programs like "SAFE - Secure Attachment Formation for Educators" can prevent the development of attachment disorders.
