Abstract

The relation between interaural phase angle differences and the binural threshold of hearing was investigated using Békésy audiometry and a Grason-Stadler phase shifter. The literature on the subject has been contradictory and limited in most cases to only one or two phase differences. Threshold tests were administered to 27 subjects at 0°, 45°, 90°, and 180° at each half-octave from 500 to 4000 Hz. Thresholds at 45°, 90°, and 180° were subtracted from thresholds at 0°, and t tests were done on the differences. The interactions among interaural phase-angle differences and the binaural thresholds were limited to frequencies of 1500 Hz and lower. This finding is consonant with some of the extant literature. Moreover, the significant interactions were limited to 45° and 90°. There were no significant interactions at any frequency for 180°.
