Abstract

The phase diagram of the binary system Co Sm was studied in the composition range 0–26 at/% Sm by differential thermal analysis, and the observed solid phases Sm 2Co 17, SmCo 5, Sm 5Co 18, Sm 2Co 7 and SmCo 5 were characterized by X-ray diffraction and electron microprobe analysis. The congruent melting point of Sm 2Co 17 is confirmed, and up to 1325°C the observed structural form is only the rhombohedral one. SmCo 5 is formed by peritectic reaction, it is not stoichiometric and the range of solid solution is determined. The metastable uncongruent melting point of Sm 2Co 7 and the stable peritectic decomposition of Sm 2Co 17 were determined by DTA. Microprobe analysis shows that the observed phases are slightly richer in samarium than indicated by their formulas.
