Abstract
Diffractive optics provides a means of providing large numbers of optical interconnections. The gratings that are described in the literature to split light, produce a rectangular array of output spots. Such an array in unsuitable for coupling into optical fibres. It has been shown here that the grating design can be modified to produce a hexagonal array of spots which is more compatible with the natural hexagonal packing of optical fibres and may be used as part of a fibre-to-fibre coupler.
