Abstract
This chapter discusses the nature of paraffin chain binary and multicomponent solids. Based on diffraction data (predominately electron diffraction), the structures of binary solids are derived. The boundary for stable binary solid solutions based on chain length differences is presented. The resemblance of multicomponent solid solutions (e.g., waxes) to binary solutions is discussed. Phase separation at a miscibility gap is presented along with the characteristic crystal structures as metastable solid solutions fractionate. The boundary between metastable solid solutions and eutectic solids is shown to be sharp. The crystal structure of eutectics is also shown not to be based on ‘mechanical mixtures’.
