Abstract
Herein, the dyed and undyed cotton fabrics were modified with methacrylate to achieve superhydrophobicity. In this regard, two methacrylate copolymers, poly(GMA-co-LMA) and poly(GMA-co-3F) was first synthesized via radical copolymerization and then were used to coat onto these cotton fabric surfaces by immersion technique in the combination with heating at 140℃. The molecular weight of these resultant copolymers was 7.5 x 104 and 4.5 x 104 daltons respectively and the polymer dispersion index (PDI) was around 2. Under the Data physic’s OCA - 20ES device, the water contact angle of modified fabrics with poly(GMA-co-LMA) or with poly(GMA-co-3F) was in range 162°-165°, revealing the superhydrophobic of the resultant fabric. Compared to the as-prepared cotton fabrics, there were effectively no changes in color and breathability after modification, promoting the potential application in the apparel industry.
