Abstract
Billie Holiday was an American jazz singer/songwriter who pioneered an innovative way of controlling phrasing and tempo. She was nicknamed “Lady Day” by Lester Young, her friend and musical colleague. Billie Holiday had a great influence on pop and jazz singing. Her stage name was coined from an admiration for the silent film actor Billie Dove. At the age of fifteen, Holiday became a professional singer. It wasn't until three years later, in 1933, she made her first record, featuring the Benny Goodman group, and after that she quickly rose to fame.
