Abstract

Bile cast nephropathy

Highlights

  • Bile cast nephropathy (BCN) is characterized by renal dysfunction and hyperbilirubinemia which is caused by the dysfunction of the hepatobiliary system

  • Bile cast nephropathy (BCN), previously known as cholemic nephrosis, is a term that is referred to a variety of kidney damages such as proximal tubular injury and the presence of casts in the distal tubules in patients that have a severe hepatic obstruction (1)

  • It occurs in patients that have dysfunction of the hepatobiliary system that leads to the co-existence of renal dysfunction and significant hyperbilirubinemia (2)

Summary

Introduction

Bile cast nephropathy (BCN), previously known as cholemic nephrosis, is a term that is referred to a variety of kidney damages such as proximal tubular injury and the presence of casts (containing bile materials) in the distal tubules in patients that have a severe hepatic obstruction (1). Bile cast nephropathy (BCN) is characterized by renal dysfunction and hyperbilirubinemia which is caused by the dysfunction of the hepatobiliary system. The pathogenesis of BCN includes renal tubular obstruction by bile casts, direct toxicity of bile acid on the tubular epithelial cells of the kidney, and severe liver dysfunction.
