Abstract

Two days after surgery a 69-year-old female patient with intracerebral bleeding developed bilateral hemothorax because of extravasation of blood to the mediastinum after a failed attempt to place a central venous catheter via the right internal jugular vein, followed by central venous catheterization of the left subclavian vein. The detection of the hemothorax was complicated by the unusual location and its slow onset. After insertion of bilateral chest tubes the patient made a good recovery.
