Abstract
Three patients with bilateral giant air cysts were treated surgically. The objective preoperative and postoperative data obtained by testing various physiologic parameters revealed an excellent improvement in functional status. Case 1 offered the opportunity to document the evolution of a giant cyst on the opposite side from the one initially treated by surgery. It is evident from the data that resectional surgery offers worthwhile therapy at this time. These observations and tests, of course, failed to elucidate any cause for these giant air cysts. The usual patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary emphysema develops much smaller blebs and bullae.
