Abstract

Emphysematous pyelonephritis (EPN) is a rare, life-threatening condition in the emergency department (ED). Bilateral EPN accounts for 5–10% of cases. We present a case of a 47-year-old post-polio syndrome man with bilateral EPN. Successfully staged treatment with parenteral antibiotic administration, percutaneous drainage (PCD), and nephrectomy saved his life. We briefly review the literature of EPN, and compare the difference between EPN and bilateral EPN.
