Abstract

ABSTRACTA positive identification of a bighorn sheep horn core recovered at the Grasshopper Ruin is discussed. The validity of ascribing subspecific distinctions to zooarchaeological material is questioned using the Grasshopper specimen as an example. Factors possibly affecting the paucity of bighorn identifications in the archaeological record are examined as illustrating some of the considerations which must be taken into account when interpreting faunal remains.
