Abstract

The world's largest robotic telescope is set to see first light next month. The 2m telescope – located on La Palma in the Canary Islands – has been built by astrophysicists from Liverpool John Moores University (JMU). By responding to automatic alerts from other observatories, the JMU-Liverpool Telescope will be able to obtain images and spectra of unexpected events in the night sky – such as the sudden appearance of gamma-ray bursts – more rapidly than any other similar facility. The telescope will also be used by undergraduates on the astrophysics degree that is run jointly by JMU and Liverpool University.
