Abstract

Knowledge and skill development ensuring that nursing scientists are optimally prepared to conduct big data research and that advanced practice nurses are prepared to use findings from big data research to optimize the health outcomes for individuals, families, and communities is a priority need in doctoral education. The purpose of this chapter is to identify critical issues involved in incorporating “big data” science into research- and practice-focused doctoral programs in nursing. The need for preparation of nurses in big data science, data science methods, and translation of findings from big data nursing research into practice will be summarized. Common core knowledge and skills and competencies specific to preparation of advanced practice nurses and nursing scientists will be emphasized. Resources for incorporating big data into doctoral curricula will be identified.
