Abstract

In this chapter we will discuss an overview of the current and future development of big data and data analytics within the aviation, tourism, and hospitality industries with special reference to Malaysia. A review was done on past and recent developments in the adoption of big data and data analytics in the aviation, tourism, and hospitality industries. This chapter discusses the adoption of data analytics by various stakeholders in the particular industries such as the authorities, decision makers, domain researchers, application users, and average consumers. Several current initiatives on the adoption of data analytics in Malaysia are discussed due to their ability to help companies improve their business decision-making, knowledge discovery, and process optimization. The overall benefits of adopting data analytics as well as the challenges of successful adoption are also discussed. As a conclusion, the study found that data analytics adoption is assisting the aviation industry in the following areas: airline and airport performance management; weather forecasting, air pollution, and congestion prediction; aircraft performance and maintenance prediction; airspace congestion prediction; and improving future fleet management, crowd management, and asset management planning. The adoption of data analytics on data collected within the tourism and hospitality industry helps to facilitate marketing personalization, save expenses, and gain a competitive advantage for tourism-related businesses. It could also offer convenience to customers. For the industry to optimize and gain data analytics’ fullest capabilities, it will need comprehensive and sufficient information generated from various data sources and accurate prediction operated by skilled data scientists and engineers.
