Abstract

In an unpredictable, dynamic and turbulent environment, firms are constrained to continuously renew and reinvent their business models and strategies to turn significant mutations of competitive environment to their advantage. Dynamic capabilities theory (DC) is a relevant framework for the analysis of the conditions under which a firm could build a sustainable competitive advantage in rapidly changing environments. The latest spectacular development of ICT and the recent rise of artificial intelligence (AI), are paving the path for an unprecedented revolution in both management and business fields. Indeed, sophisticated algorithms coupled with Big Data and the calculation power of computers, allow substantial advances in domains such as marketing, auditing, finance, logistics…and are ready to revolutionize HRM, organization and strategy among others. The main purpose of our research is to try to build a theoretical framework around AI as a meta-dynamic capability. AI will be pervasive and transversal in strategic, organizational and operational processes. AI will probably trigger fast resources transformation and optimal configuration (first order DC). Moreover, AI will also be deployed at the operational processes level (second order DC) in order to achieve strategic fit. Linking together Big Data analytics, AI and DC theory, this research aims to open new research avenues in the field of strategic management research.
