Abstract

A method for obtaining static and dynamic bifurcation points as well as some Hopf degeneracies in chemical reactors using frequency domain analysis is proposed. Bifurcation curves are obtained when main and auxiliary parameters are varied. Hopf bifurcation is detected by applying a graphical criterion which uses the characteristic loci and the harmonic balance method. The two consecutive, irreversible, exothermic, first-order reactions A→B→C that take place in a CSTR are considered. The results are presented by ploting the bifurcation curves on the manifold of steady-state solutions. The stability of the emerging periodic orbits is also shown. Furthermore, Hopf degeneracies of codimension 2 áre identified using this approach with a recent classification.
