Abstract

The rate-problem associated with the bifurcation of rigid/plastic bodies is formulated in general terms and illustrated by considering the buckling of a rectangular plate with lateral restraint. The connexion between the present formulation and the uniqueness criterion of Hill is also discussed in relation to the plate problem. It is found that for a sufficiently long plate under prescribed velocity of compression, the critical load approaches the value given by the tangent modulus theory.
