Abstract

Lasers with stabilized frequencies are tested and intercompared by means of beat frequency measurements. An optical and electronic logic system is described, by means of which the beat frequency may be counted with a bidirectional (up-down) counter over the range +100 to -100 MHz. Such a system gives a true measurement of the average frequency difference of the two lasers, even when this average is much smaller than the modulation range of either laser.
