Abstract

Photoinduced phase change in manganite thin films are described, which are bidirectional between metallic and insulating states and persistent within the laboratory time scale. The phenomena are due to the strong cross-coupling between electronic, magnetic, and elastic interactions. Among them, the elastic part is particularly important to make the process slow and the effect persistent or at least metastable. Observations supporting this view are presented.
