Abstract

(This is a continuation of “Jean de Reszke as Pedagogue” that appeared in vol. 12, no. 1 of this journal. The author wishes to thank J. Rigbie Turner and the staff of the Pierpont Morgan Library for access to the de Reszkes' materials, as well as Susan Goss and Feth Winner of the Roagers & Hammerstein Archives of Recorded Sound for the opportunity to listen to Bidù Sayão's recordings that are not available to the general public.) Astute readers will notice that the spelling of Bidù Sayão's name in this article is at variance with the spelling found in The New Grove Dictionary of Opera. In New Grove her name is spelled “Bidù,” with an acute accent over the u; however, the diva herself adopted a grave accent early in her career so that her name would not be mispronounced as “Bidi.” It is this spelling that is used throughout this article. —Ed.
