Abstract

Cyclists’ running red lights is very common in China and has been one of the major reasons for traffic accidents in urban areas. This paper has discussed psychological factors behind bicyclists’ behavior of running red lights at signalized intersections such as anxiety, group psychology, deliberate action, convenience psychology, recklessness and ignorance and subconsciousness. Next, a psychological questionnaire survey has been analyzed and studied. The survey includes three subjects: reasons for running red lights, maximum waiting time and measures for prevention of running red lights. Meaningful conclusions have been drawn as to what are the main reasons that underlie cyclists’ running red lights and how to effectively prevent cyclists from running red lights.
