Abstract

Situations such as learning how to interact with others in a socially acceptable way, how to handle one's own feelings, and how to evolve as an individual while becoming a member of small friendship groups and the larger groups of the classroom constitute some of the developmental problems encountered by most children as they mature. Bibliotherapy, a process which can aid in the solution of personal problems through selected reading, can be combined with puppetry techniques to guide young children through these socially awkward or difficult situations. In addition to helping the child with the socialization process, many instructional benefits are realized. Among these are gaining an appreciation for good children's literature, gaining knowledge about story structures, increasing oral language fluency, and increasing the child's vocabulary.
