Abstract

Abstract Objectives: The objective is to study the characteristics of top 100 most cited articles on oral potentially malignant disorders of the oral cavity. Materials and Methods: The Web of Science database was used to retrieve the top most cited articles using keyword “potentially malignant disorders,” “premalignant lesions” and “premalignant conditions.” The data was searched to include journal name, publication year, authors, country of origin and type of study. These data were used to study the characteristics of top 100 most cited articles. Results: The top 100 articles had a combined citation of 11,198 and the number of citations ranged from 54 to 712. These were published between 1966 and 2018. The citation density ranged 1.71–40 with average citation density of 13.75/year. Majority of authors were from the United States. Conclusion: The analysis reveals interesting facts about the most cited articles. Most articles were narrative reviews and etiopathogenesis was the most common area of research.
