Abstract

Adolf Eugene Fick (Fig. 1), a German ophthalmologist working in Zurich, published the first journal paper on contact lenses in 1888 [1]. In this paper, he described the process of fabricating and fitting afocal scleral contact lenses first on rabbits, then on himself and finally on a small group of volunteer patients with keratoconus.
