  • Revista de Gestão Social e Ambiental
  • Samara Moreira Barbosa + 1 more

Objective: This research aims to critically evaluate the current state of knowledge on green criminology and environmental laws, identifying the conceptual, normative and institutional limitations associated with the complexity of crimes against nature. Theoretical Framework: The research is based on Green Criminology, which broadens the definition of crime to include environmental damage that is not legally classified as such. It adopts an ecocentric approach, criticizing the traditional legalistic model and penal selectivity. It integrates issues such as ecological justice, colonialism, capitalism and organized crime. Method: The method used in this study is an Integrated Literature Review, which involved formulating a guiding question, selecting scientific articles published between 2020 and 2025 in databases such as the CAPES Journals Portal and the Web of Science, and evaluating the results. The publications were systematically evaluated based on a combination of keywords, and the results were organized into theoretical perspectives that could be used to tackle environmental crimes. Results and Discussion: The investigation revealed structural errors in environmental legislation, such as the disproportionate nature of penalties, the lack of up-to-date definitions and the ineffectiveness in holding economic actors to account. Green Criminology has emerged as a theoretical and practical framework for the study of crime that replaces the legalistic model, combining ecological justice with criticism of the state and capitalism. The ideas have been organized around proposals that include legislative changes, integrated governance and institutional strengthening. Research Implications: The research promotes Green Criminology as a critical and environmentally-oriented paradigm, expanding the definition of crime beyond legal boundaries. In practice, it advocates legislative changes, institutional integration and evidence-based public policies to deal with complex environmental crimes. It also highlights the need for technical training and ecological justice as means for effective environmental management. Originality/Value: The study's conclusions highlight the need to reform environmental laws and government policies in relation to environmental crimes. The research reinforces the value of Green Criminology as a crucial tool in interpreting ecological damage and creating more effective public strategies. It also highlights the need to integrate environmental justice, anti-cancer initiatives and institutional reform.

Mesoscale Modeling of the Meteorological Impacts of Irrigation during the 2012 Central Plains Drought
  • May 1, 2017
  • Journal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology
  • Clint Aegerter + 8 more

In the summer of 2012, the central plains of the United States experienced one of its most severe droughts on record. This study examines the meteorological impacts of irrigation during this drought through observations and model simulations using the Community Land Model coupled to the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model. A simple parameterization of irrigation processes is added into the WRF Model. In addition to keeping soil moisture in irrigated areas at a minimum of 50% of soil moisture hold capacity, this irrigation scheme has the following new features: 1) accurate representation of the spatial distribution of irrigation area in the study domain by using a MODIS-based land surface classification with 250-m pixel size and 2) improved representation of the time series of leaf area index (LAI) values derived from crop modeling and satellite observations in both irrigated and nonirrigated areas. Several numerical sensitivity experiments are conducted. The WRF-simulated temperature field when including soil moisture and LAI modification within the model is shown to be most consistent with ground and satellite observations, all indicating a temperature decrease of 2–3 K in irrigated areas relative to the control run. Modification of LAI in irrigated and dryland areas led to smaller changes, with a 0.2-K temperature decrease in irrigated areas and up to a 0.5-K temperature increase in dryland areas. Furthermore, the increased soil moisture and modified LAI are shown to lead to statistically significant increases in surface divergence and surface pressure and to decreases in planetary boundary layer height over irrigated areas.

Agriculture creates subtle genetic structure among migratory and nonmigratory populations of burrowing owls throughout North America.
  • Sep 17, 2020
  • Ecology and Evolution
  • Alberto Macías‐Duarte + 2 more

Population structure across a species distribution primarily reflects historical, ecological, and evolutionary processes. However, large‐scale contemporaneous changes in land use have the potential to create changes in habitat quality and thereby cause changes in gene flow, population structure, and distributions. As such, land‐use changes in one portion of a species range may explain declines in other portions of their range. For example, many burrowing owl populations have declined or become extirpated near the northern edge of the species' breeding distribution during the second half of the 20th century. In the same period, large extensions of thornscrub were converted to irrigated agriculture in northwestern Mexico. These irrigated areas may now support the highest densities of burrowing owls in North America. We tested the hypothesis that burrowing owls that colonized this recently created owl habitat in northwestern Mexico originated from declining migratory populations from the northern portion of the species' range (migration‐driven breeding dispersal whereby long‐distance migrants from Canada and the United States became year‐round residents in the newly created irrigated agriculture areas in Mexico). We used 10 novel microsatellite markers to genotype 1,560 owls from 36 study locations in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. We found that burrowing owl populations are practically panmictic throughout the entire North American breeding range. However, an analysis of molecular variance provided some evidence that burrowing owl populations in northwestern Mexico and Canada together are more genetically differentiated from the rest of the populations in the breeding range, lending some support to our migration‐driven breeding dispersal hypothesis. We found evidence of subtle genetic differentiation associated with irrigated agricultural areas in southern Sonora and Sinaloa in northwestern Mexico. Our results suggest that land use can produce location‐specific population dynamics leading to subtle genetic structure even in the absence of dispersal barriers.

  • Kybernetes
  • Ye Chen + 3 more

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to present a bibliometric analysis and systematic literature review of industry convergence and value innovation to understand the current research status; second, to provide a coherent theoretical research framework for future research.Design/methodology/approachThis study adopts a two-step analysis approach by combining bibliometric analysis and systematic literature review to explore the research topic of industry convergence and value innovation. Besides, two bibliometric tools, HistCite and VOSviewer, were applied to this study.FindingsThis study found that Stefanie Bröring and Fredrik Hacklin are the top two most influential authors among all authors in the sample publications. Technological Forecasting and Social Change is one of the top-ranking journal that often publishes this topic of articles. Germany and the University of Munster are the most influential country and institutions, respectively. Besides, five core research themes were identified based on keywords co-occurrence map, theoretical lenses, factors promoting industry convergence, indicators of industry convergence, the impact of industry convergence and emerging research directions. Based on the above analysis, this paper constructed a theoretical research framework of industry convergence and value innovation.Research limitations/implicationsThis paper only draw data from one database – Web of Science – which cannot provide broad coverage of the research topic. Besides, the bibliometric method of this paper is based on high local citation score and high-frequency words, articles in the skirting subjects’ area may not be analyzed.Practical implicationsWith the rapid development of technology, such as nanotechnology, radio - frequency identification (RFID), etc., the iterative upgrading of products also comes. As a result, the boundary between industries is gradually blurred, and the phenomenon of industry convergence appears. Therefore, managerial decision-makers are facing challenges of how to respond to the convergence phenomena. From the firm level, firms are facing the problem of value innovation of the existing product, new product development and core competence improvement. Industries are facing the problem of transformation and upgrading. This paper provides certain theoretical insights for both firms and industries to guide the practice accordingly.Originality/valueThis paper is the first to use a bibliometric method to examine the topic of industry convergence and value innovation. In addition, this paper presents an in-depth analysis of this topic and provides a comprehensive theoretical research framework for future study.

This study aimed to understand research trends, determine frontier topics, and explore the developments in and the differences between research conducted in China and the rest of the world. We analyzed the research status of rare diseases in China and globally over the past decade using bibliometric methods. We focused on rare disease literature indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases from January 2013 to December 2023. We selected studies based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. CiteSpace 6.1.R6 software were used to prepare knowledge graphs and perform comparative analyses of authors, institutions, content, and hot topics between both databases. A total of 10,754 articles from the WoS and 969 from the CNKI met the inclusion criteria. In the past 10 years, the diagnosis and treatment of rare diseases have been a common research focus in both China and the world. China has emphasized more on "orphan drugs". "Genes" and "management" were focused globally. The United States had the greatest number of publications. China ranks high in terms of publication volume and institutional ranking. Research interest in rare diseases has gradually increased worldwide, with European and American countries maintaining a leading position. China has made significant contributions. China's research is lagging compared to global trends, lacking collaboration with other countries. The diagnosis and treatment of rare diseases remain central themes, whereas genetic research, artificial intelligence, and sociological studies on rare disease populations are emerging as hot topics.
