In this paper, a bibliometric analysis was applied to evaluate the global scientific output of lithium ion battery research from 1993 to 2008. The results show that a power model could be applied to demonstrate the high correlation between cumulative number of articles and publication year. Internal collaborative articles are prevalent in recent years and are predicted to increase in the future. Summaries on the most productive authors, corresponding authors, and institutes are presented. Researchers from North America, western Europe, and eastern Asia contributed most of the publications. Some findings on research trends are provided through a comprehensive analysis of author keywords and words in the title, which may facilitate the discussion on future hotspots in lithium ion battery research.
